Crypto exchange Bitget is officially winding down its operations in Japan. The platform has already stopped accepting new account registrations from Japanese residents and is preparing to phase out existing functionality over the coming months. Bitget Japan Exit Timeline: Critical Dates and User Requirements
The platform’s exit will roll out in structured stages to give users time to manage their funds. Account restrictions for Japan-based users will begin on November 1. Traders holding active positions must close them manually before December 31, as any positions still open past midnight on New Year’s Eve will be forcibly liquidated by the exchange. Bitget noted that impacted traders will receive direct emails detailing specific procedures for handling and withdrawing their assets.
For users who live outside Japan but believe their account was mistakenly classified as a Japanese resident account, there is a strict deadline to rectify the error. Misclassified users must complete “Level 2” identity verification—which requires submitting official proof of address—by November 1. Failing to clear this secondary identity check prior to the deadline will result in the account being permanently flagged as a Japanese resident account and subjected to full service restrictions.
Increased Regulatory Friction Drives Bitget’s Market Exit
Bitget’s decision to pull out of the country follows years of increasing scrutiny from Japanese financial authorities. Japan maintains one of the strictest crypto regulatory frameworks in the world, requiring any platform soliciting local users to hold a formal registration with the state. The Financial Services Agency (FSA) issued public warnings against Bitget in both March 2023 and November 2024 for serving residents without proper authorization.
The pressure culminated in June 2025, when the Kanto Local Finance Bureau—a regional branch of Japan’s Ministry of Finance—issued a formal warning against BTG Technology Holdings Limited, the entity operating Bitget. The regulatory body specifically cited the platform for soliciting online over-the-counter derivatives transactions without local registration. Facing continuous legal roadblocks, Bitget chose to complete a full market exit rather than pursue native licensing.
