If you are building or trading on the BNB Smart Chain (BSC), the network just received a massive upgrade. On Tuesday, BNB Chain officially activated the highly anticipated Pasteur hard fork on its mainnet. This major update is designed to close critical security gaps across bridges and validators while significantly boosting the network’s transaction capacity. By merging three crucial BNB Evolution Proposals, the Pasteur upgrade aims to keep the ecosystem safe and lightning-fast without altering its impressive 450-millisecond block time.

How the Pasteur Upgrade Boosts BSC Security

Security is always a top priority in the decentralized space, and the Pasteur hard fork addresses this head-on by fixing previous vulnerabilities. A major part of this upgrade focuses on strengthening the network’s bridge, staking, and governance mechanisms. By implementing a proposal known as BEP-682, the network now actively rejects duplicate validator entries during cross-chain light-block verifications. This ensures that validators cannot be counted more than once when approving bridge transactions, effectively shutting down a potential exploit that bad actors could use to manipulate the system.

In addition to bridge security, the upgrade introduces BEP-695 to tighten the network’s internal controls. This proposal completely revamps how validator key rotation, slashing protocols, and governance voting operate. By stripping authority from outdated validator keys and blocking restricted addresses from casting votes, the BNB Chain ensures that only active, verified, and honest participants have a say in the network’s operation and future direction.

Faster Transactions and Fuller Blocks for Users

Beyond keeping user funds safe, the Pasteur hard fork brings a clever solution to network congestion through BEP-675. Under the previous system, both builders and validators had to execute transactions before a proposed block could be signed. This repeated, double-duty work ate up precious time within the network’s short block window, which unfortunately meant that blocks were sometimes left partially empty during busy periods. Now, specialist builders can submit blocks that they have already executed. Validators simply check these proposed blocks against consensus rules, sign and broadcast them instantly, and complete the full execution verification afterward.

This new route makes block creation incredibly efficient, allowing the network to pack more transactions into a single block. In controlled tests on QANet—an internal testing environment built to mirror the geographically distributed validators of the BSC mainnet—this streamlined process boosted transaction throughput by an impressive 88 percent. The network’s capacity jumped from 1,237 to 2,324 transactions per second, all while keeping the block interval and the 100-million gas limit completely unchanged. Following the successful Maxwell and Fermi upgrades in 2025 that slashed block times down to just 450 milliseconds, Pasteur represents the next major milestone in making BNB Chain one of the most efficient networks in the blockchain industry.
