The intersection of cryptocurrency and the courtroom saw major developments this week as federal agencies and prosecutors took aggressive steps against fraud, insider trading, and regulatory noncompliance. From lingering repercussions of the FTX fallout to prediction market controversies and international asset seizures, enforcement authorities continue to demonstrate that blockchain activity remains firmly under the legal microscope.

Regulatory Enforcements and Prediction Market Showdowns

Former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison and FTX co-founder Gary Wang have officially received multi-year bans following consent orders entered by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Imposed by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), both executives face a five-year trading ban alongside significant registration restrictions—ten years for Ellison and eight years for Wang. The penalties reflect their substantial cooperation in the broader FTX investigations, concluding civil enforcement actions separate from their criminal sentencing.

Meanwhile, federal prosecutors are pushing forward in their case against Gannon Ken Van Dyke, an active-duty U.S. soldier accused of profiting over $400,000 on the prediction platform Polymarket. Prosecutors allege Van Dyke traded event contracts using confidential, non-public military intelligence related to the January operation involving Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. In a recent court filing, the government firmly opposed Van Dyke’s motion to dismiss, rejecting his defense that event contracts fall into a regulatory gray area outside CFTC swap definitions and urging the court to let the charges proceed to trial.

Unsealing the $165 Million “Crypto Program” Indictment

In the Northern District of Georgia, a federal judge unsealed a sweeping 25-count indictment against Edward Zimbardi for orchestrating an alleged $165 million cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme. Operating under the name “Crypto Program” between 2022 and 2023, Zimbardi allegedly lured thousands of victims with deceptive guarantees of massive yields before fleeing abroad. Following his apprehension and deportation from Fiji, he now faces multiple counts of wire fraud, transactional money laundering, and conspiracy.

Federal authorities are actively pursuing full asset forfeiture, highlighting the international coordination involved in tracking illicit funds. European law enforcement previously seized approximately $6 million in digital assets connected to the scheme, including holdings across Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Shiba Inu, Dogecoin, and stablecoins. Zimbardi’s prosecution marks another significant effort by U.S. law enforcement to recover investor funds and hold cross-border crypto operators accountable.
