Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings show that Protect Progress, a Super PAC heavily funded by digital asset heavyweights Coinbase and Ripple Labs, has surged its political spending to support incumbent Representative Shri Thanedar. Total media expenditures in the race have topped $2 million, marking a dramatic push just days before voters head to the polls.
The sudden uptick in ad buys effectively doubles what the PAC had disclosed just a week earlier. Recent FEC reports detail an additional $884,240 dedicated to promotional spots boosting Thanedar, along with more than $150,000 aimed at opposition messaging against his primary challenger, Donavan McKinney. The substantial war chest reflects a broader national strategy by crypto-backed political organizations to secure allies on Capitol Hill ahead of crucial regulatory votes.
Legislative Record Drives Major Industry Support
Protect Progress’s decision to pour millions into the 13th District centers on Thanedar’s key votes in the U.S. House of Representatives. During his tenure, the Detroit-area lawmaker voted in favor of the GENIUS Act—a stablecoin regulatory framework—and backed the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, which aims to establish clearer federal oversight for digital assets. Thanedar also cosponsored the Promoting Innovation in Blockchain Development Act, designed to safeguard open-source developers from regulatory overreach.
These policy positions have drawn sharp criticism from challenger Donavan McKinney. In a recent campaign statement, McKinney pushed back against the massive influx of outside cash, accusing the crypto lobby of using independent expenditures to influence local voters and reward key lawmakers. McKinney pointed to high-profile political earnings in the crypto sector as evidence of a growing conflict of interest between industry interests and everyday constituents.
Fairshake Network Expands Political Footprint Across Key States
Protect Progress operates as a main affiliate of Fairshake PAC, the dominant Super PAC that spent over $170 million during the 2024 political cycle. The political powerhouse entered the 2026 election cycle with nearly $193 million in reserves, backed heavily by corporate contributions. According to consumer watchdog group Public Citizen, crypto-backed organizations have collectively spent over $189 million on federal political efforts so far, with Fairshake and its affiliates accounting for more than $82 million of that total.
Michigan is far from the only focus of the industry’s political strategy. Fairshake affiliates have spent heavily in primary races across Texas, Illinois, Washington, and Alabama. In Washington’s 4th Congressional District, affiliate PAC Defend American Jobs dropped over $65,000 on media buys for a Republican contender, while allocating more than $511,000 in Alabama to back former U.S. Representative Jerry Carl Jr. ahead of his state’s upcoming primary. As regulatory legislation continues to move through Congress, the crypto sector’s financial influence remains one of the defining stories of the primary election season.
