The Ethereum blockchain is getting important updates as it gets ready for the Pectra upgrade. On August 12, 2024, Go Ethereum (Geth), a popular Ethereum client, released version 1.14.18. This update fixes several bugs and includes key changes to improve the network’s performance. Earlier, Nimbus, another major Ethereum client, released version 24.7.0 in late July, which brought important updates to the beacon API, crucial for the blockchain’s staking system.
Go Ethereum’s (Geth) latest release, version 1.14.18, mainly focuses on fixing bugs found in various parts of the client. As a key component of the Ether blockchain, Geth’s stability and performance are crucial. This update fixes several important issues and prepares the system for the upcoming Pectra upgrade.
A significant change in this update is the adjustment of command settings, especially the ‘Blobpool’ flags, which are now working correctly. The ‘evm run’ command has been improved to avoid overwriting the sender account in the ‘genesis.json’ file and allows for setting the ‘baseFeePerGas’. These updates aim to improve the network’s performance and provide more flexibility and accuracy for developers.

Resolution of Signature Process Issues for Large ‘ChainID’ Values
The Go API update includes several crucial fixes. Notably, it resolves a bug that affected the signature process for large ‘ChainID’ values, which is important for transactions across Ethereum networks with high ‘ChainID’ values. The ‘ethclient.Client.NetworkID’ now supports hexadecimal format values, enhancing compatibility with servers that return such data. Additionally, a major fix addresses a snap-sync database corruption issue that could occur during sync restarts, ensuring better data integrity.
The update also corrects the ‘eth_call’ storage overrides, making sure that previous storage values are properly cleared when a new storage object is specified, aligning with the feature’s intended design. The Nimbus client released version 24.7.0 on July 29, 2024. This update is crucial for solo stakers and node operators as it addresses issues in the staking infrastructure, including the SSV Network. It also brings several improvements to the beacon API, which is essential for the network’s proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism.
Though categorized as a low-priority update, Nimbus v24.7.0 is key to ensuring network stability and smooth staking operations as Ethereum prepares for the Pectra upgrade. The enhancements to the beacon API highlight the importance of the consensus layer in Ethereum’s shift to a fully PoS-based network.

Upcoming Release of Pectra alpha.4
Specifications
The ETH community is looking forward to the Pectra upgrade, which is set to bring major improvements to the network. On August 8, 2024, Ethereum developers held the 139th All Core Developers Consensus (ACDC) call, led by Ethereum Foundation researcher Alex Stokes.
The meeting provided key updates on the Pectra upgrade, focusing on network stability, development networks, and enhancements to the Beacon Chain’s consensus layer. EF Researcher Hsiao Wei Wang announced the upcoming release of alpha.4
for the Pectra consensus layer, which will include various fixes to improve the upgrade’s effectiveness. Developer Operations Engineer Barnabas Busa reported that Pectra Devnet 2 has achieved 85% network participation, indicating a stable testing environment.
However, challenges persist with execution layer (EL) clients. Busa pointed out ongoing issues with EthereumJS and Erigon, which need further investigation. Additionally, a minor problem with the Prysm client requires more attention. EF DevOps Engineer Parithosh Jayanthi also noted that Lighthouse, Besu, and Teku nodes are facing issues that need to be resolved before the Pectra upgrade can proceed smoothly.
