The cryptocurrency world is witnessing another major network reset. Following a severe exploit that led to the creation of forged ONE tokens, the layer-1 network Harmony has announced controversial plans to roll back its blockchain. This drastic measure will wipe out over 109,000 recently confirmed transactions, highlighting the extreme steps developers must sometimes take to secure a compromised network and protect user assets.

Why Harmony is Wiping Out Recent Transactions

To recover from the security breach, validators on the Harmony network will revert to a specific checkpoint recorded on August 11 at 11:25 pm UTC. From this point forward, new blocks will be generated using replacement databases. Unfortunately, this means discarding a significant window of recent network activity, including 109,126 regular transactions and 315 staking transactions that occurred after the designated time.

Developers explained that a selective restoration of valid transactions simply isn’t safe. Attempting to pick and choose which transactions to keep would result in an inconsistent chain state. Crucial blockchain data—such as wallet balances, smart contract states, and nonces—would differ drastically on the replacement chain, potentially leading to further technical failures or financial losses.

The decision comes after reports last week revealed that unauthorized ONE tokens had been minted out of thin air and rapidly moved to various cryptocurrency exchanges. Harmony’s investigative team has since tracked down nearly all of the forged tokens, tracing them to specific wallets and service boundaries. The team is currently collaborating with cross-chain bridges, exchanges, and law enforcement to resolve the fallout. At the time of the incident, the ONE token held a market capitalization of approximately $10.8 million according to CoinGecko data.

Ravencoin Faces a Similar Rollback Dilemma

Harmony isn’t the only network currently grappling with the difficult decision to reverse confirmed blockchain activity. Ravencoin has recently found itself in a parallel dispute following a severe consensus flaw exploit. This vulnerability has forced the network to consider a massive three-day blockchain reorganization, an event that sharply divides the community and its miners.

In response to the Ravencoin exploit, mining pools that control the majority of the network’s hash rate have actively started building a competing chain. If successful, this coordinated effort will overwrite the compromised history and reverse previously confirmed transactions. At the time of the dispute, Ravencoin was trading at $0.002819, representing a total market capitalization of roughly $46.3 million.

Both incidents underscore the ongoing security challenges inherent in blockchain technology. While immutability is a core promise of decentralized networks, devastating exploits often force developers and communities to choose between preserving the chain’s exact history and saving the project from financial collapse.
