Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s largest banking institution, has significantly ramped up its digital asset strategy. In the first quarter of 2026, the bank more than doubled its cryptocurrency exposure, aggressively pivotting into new assets while nearly wiping out its existing positions in others.

According to a report by local digital asset outlet Criptovaluta.it, Intesa Sanpaolo’s crypto holdings surged from roughly $100 million at the close of 2025 to an impressive $235 million as of March 31, 2026. The massive accumulation highlights a growing trend of institutional crypto adoption across Europe’s traditional finance sector.

Inside Intesa Sanpaolo’s Q1 Crypto Portfolio Shift

The bank’s aggressive portfolio growth was primarily driven by doubling down on Bitcoin and exploring new institutional vehicles. Intesa expanded its existing Bitcoin positions by accumulating more shares in both the ARK 21Shares BTC ETF and BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF.

However, the biggest surprise of the quarter was the bank’s diversification into alternative layer-1 assets. For the first time, Intesa entered the Ethereum ecosystem via BlackRock’s iShares Staked Ethereum Trust. It also made a notable debut in Ripple’s ecosystem, acquiring a fresh stake in the Grayscale XRP Trust ETF valued at approximately $26 million. This move comes closely on the heels of Ripple’s recent announcement to provide institutional custody services to the Italian banking giant.

To hedge and leverage these spot positions, the bank also initiated its first-ever derivatives play in the crypto space by opening a new position in iShares Bitcoin Trust call options. Representatives previously confirmed that these positions are maintained for proprietary trading purposes, though it remains undisclosed whether any portion serves as a hedge for professional client products.

In stark contrast to its bullish stance on BTC, ETH, and XRP, Intesa Sanpaolo almost entirely liquidated its Solana exposure. The bank aggressively slashed its holdings in the Bitwise Solana Staking ETF from 266,320 shares to a mere 2,817 shares—marking a near-total exit from the network.

Rebalancing Crypto Equities and the Broader European Banking Trend

Beyond direct token exposure, Intesa thoroughly restructured its crypto-adjacent equity portfolio during Q1. The bank added 165,600 shares of institutional custodian BitGo while completely dumping its position in Bitmine. It also closed out its put options on Strategy and trimmed its stake in Cantor Equity Partners II—the blank-check vehicle facilitating the public listing of tokenization pioneer Securitize. Meanwhile, the bank showcased long-term confidence in crypto infrastructure by boosting its Coinbase holdings from 1,500 shares to 10,357 shares.

Despite the heavy investment in future-facing finance, Intesa’s public stock faced minor headwinds, closing at 5.74 euros with a 1.56% daily drop and a 3.14% decline year-to-date.

Intesa’s aggressive expansion mirrors a broader, unstoppable shift across the European banking landscape as regulatory frameworks clear the path for digital assets. Spain’s BBVA already offers round-the-clock Bitcoin and Ether trading directly through its mobile app, and France’s BPCE is aggressively rolling out in-app trading via its regulated subsidiary Hexarq, aiming to capture 12 million customers by the end of the year.

Simultaneously, a massive consortium of 12 major European powerhouses—including Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, ING, and UniCredit—has formed a new venture called Qivalis. The group is currently building a fully MiCA-compliant, euro-backed stablecoin slated to launch in the second half of 2026, ensuring that traditional European banking remains at the forefront of the digital asset revolution.
