Kraken is making a massive push into everyday consumer finance. Through its dedicated payment app, Krak, the crypto exchange has officially rolled out a multi-asset debit card for United States customers. This major release allows users to seamlessly spend both cryptocurrency and traditional fiat money while earning attractive cashback rewards. It marks a significant milestone for Kraken’s parent company, Payward, as it aggressively broadens its ecosystem beyond standard crypto trading to rival traditional financial institutions.
Krak’s New US Debit Card: Crypto Spending and Rewards
The newly launched Krak debit card offers remarkable flexibility for American users, supporting over 600 different currencies and digital assets. When a customer makes a purchase, their holdings are instantly converted into US dollars at the point of sale. One of the most unique features is the ability to draw from multiple balances for a single transaction, giving users the freedom to set the exact order in which their assets are spent. Eligible users can access both physical and virtual versions of the card, which is issued by Lead Bank on the Visa network and powered by Stripe Issuing.
Beyond its spending versatility, the Krak card is designed to compete directly with traditional credit card rewards programs. Users can earn up to two percent cashback in either US dollars or Bitcoin, with the exact rate tied to their average asset holdings across the Krak app, Kraken, and Kraken Pro platforms. According to a recent Morning Consult survey commissioned by Krak, there is a strong consumer appetite for this debt-free rewards model. The study revealed that forty-two percent of credit card users worry about paying off their monthly balances, and sixty percent would happily switch to a reward-earning debit card to avoid borrowing. This US rollout follows a highly successful launch in the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area, where more than 135,000 multi-asset cards have been issued since December 2025.
Payward’s Strategy: Moving Beyond Crypto to Traditional Finance
The launch of the US debit card is just one piece of a much larger puzzle for Payward. The parent company is setting its sights on a massive expansion of its financial services product line. Speaking at the recent Wyoming Blockchain Symposium, Payward Co-CEO Arjun Sethi outlined a strategic vision to push into additional asset classes. By diversifying their offerings, Sethi explained, the company becomes much less vulnerable to the volatility of any single specific market. This transition includes offering actual banking services and heavily focusing on tokenized shares and direct allocations as a core part of their growth strategy.
Sethi did not shy away from comparing Payward’s long-term ambitions to those of legacy banking giants, stating that the company needs to build products and services comparable to institutions like JPMorgan. This aggressive expansion aligns with a broader industry trend where major cryptocurrency exchanges are moving far beyond simple spot trading to offer equities, derivatives, prediction markets, and tokenized assets. In a related move showcasing this global strategy, Kraken also recently opened trading for over 7,000 US-listed stocks to its customers in the European Economic Area, further cementing its evolution into a comprehensive financial powerhouse.
