South Korean financial powerhouse Mirae Asset is making a monumental push into the digital asset space, revealing plans to build a 150 trillion won ($109 billion) empire centered around its newly acquired exchange, Digital X. Formerly known as Korbit, this platform is now the cornerstone of the company’s forward-looking financial strategy. Mirae Asset founder and chairman Park Hyeon-joo recently shared this vision during a company event in Seoul, emphasizing that Digital X will serve as a foundational pillar for what he calls the “Mirae Asset 3.0” era.
Ambitious Expansion into Stablecoins and Tokenized Assets
To reach this massive valuation, Digital X is diversifying far beyond traditional cryptocurrency trading. The platform is setting its sights on stablecoins, security token offerings, and the rapidly growing sector of real-world assets. In a move that blends traditional finance with modern blockchain technology, Mirae Asset plans to use Digital X to tokenize physical commodities, specifically targeting gold, silver, and electricity. This strategic approach signals a major shift toward integrating tangible, real-world assets into the digital economy, offering investors innovative ways to trade and interact with historically physical markets.
Rebranding Korbit to Digital X and Introducing Zero-Fee Trading
This sweeping transformation follows Mirae Asset Consulting’s historic acquisition of a 97.15% stake in Korbit this past July, a deal totaling 141.4 billion won. Founded in 2013 as South Korea’s very first cryptocurrency exchange, Korbit had struggled to maintain dominance, holding just a 0.5% market share in 2025. By acquiring and rebranding it to Digital X, Mirae Asset became the first affiliate of a major South Korean financial group to take control of a domestic crypto exchange, breathing new life into the pioneering platform.
To aggressively capture market share and attract a new wave of users, Digital X has completely waived trading fees across all won-denominated assets. This zero-fee promotional policy kicked off recently and is scheduled to remain in effect until August 24, 2027, giving the revamped exchange a powerful and long-lasting competitive edge in the fiercely contested South Korean crypto market.
