In a critical move for the future of digital asset regulation, the White House’s chief cryptocurrency policy negotiator is staying put. Patrick Witt has officially announced that he will defer his upcoming military training to ensure the highly anticipated CLARITY Act makes it through the Senate. With a tight deadline looming, his decision keeps key leadership intact during a make-or-break moment for the US crypto market.

Why Patrick Witt is Staying for the CLARITY Act Push

Witt, who serves as the executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, took to X to share the update. He confirmed that while he remains deeply committed to his service in the Georgia Army National Guard, his mandatory training has been postponed. This allows him to see the complex legislative effort through to the finish line just as the bill hits the Senate floor.

The CLARITY Act represents a massive milestone as it aims to create the very first comprehensive regulatory framework for the American cryptocurrency market. However, the clock is ticking. The legislation faces a strict deadline to pass the Senate before the upcoming August 8 recess. As the lead negotiator for the White House, Witt’s continued presence is viewed as essential for keeping these high-stakes negotiations on track.

Originally, Witt was scheduled to report for Judge Advocate General training on July 27, which would qualify him to serve as a legal officer in the Guard. This is actually the second time he has had to hit pause on his military obligations for this legislation. He previously deferred his training back in April when the CLARITY Act negotiations stretched out much longer than initially expected.

Harry Jung Announces Departure from the White House Crypto Council

Witt’s decision to stay at his post coincides with a major personnel shift within his own team. Harry Jung, the deputy director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, recently announced that he will be leaving government service. Jung was originally slated to step up and handle Witt’s responsibilities on the council while he was away on military leave.

In a reflective post on X, Jung expressed immense gratitude for his time in the role, noting that he will be stepping down in two weeks. Looking back on his tenure, he highlighted how much the landscape has shifted over the last two years, proudly noting that their work fundamentally transformed America’s policy position on cryptocurrency.

With Jung making his exit and the August recess rapidly approaching, all eyes are now on Witt and the Senate. The next few weeks will ultimately determine if the administration can successfully pass the CLARITY Act and establish the firm regulatory guidelines the crypto industry has been waiting for.
