Investors are snapping up tokenized gold even as the traditional bullion market takes a massive hit. Despite physical gold recording its worst quarter in over a decade, Tether Gold (XAUt) has seen its physical reserves jump significantly, signaling a strong and growing demand for on-chain commodity exposure.
Investors Buy the Dip as Gold Prices Tumble
During the second quarter, physical gold prices dropped by 14.1%, marking the asset’s steepest quarterly decline since the spring of 2013. However, rather than fleeing the market, crypto-savvy investors used this widespread weakness as a prime opportunity to accumulate more wealth. The physical bullion backing Tether Gold increased by a notable 9.5% during this exact same period.
According to Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, this trend proves that XAUt holders aren’t just buying in when the market is hot. Instead, they are strategically stepping in during market dips to increase their holdings. Ardoino noted that investors are drawn to the product because it offers a fully backed, highly transparent, and easily portable way to own physical gold directly on the blockchain.
Tokenized Commodities Grow with New Certifications
The broader market for real-world assets on the blockchain is evolving rapidly, with user adoption outpacing price action. While the overall value of distributed tokenized commodities dipped by 4.2% to $4.58 billion over the past month, the actual number of users holding these assets grew by 6.5%, pushing the total holder count past 253,000.
Tether Gold continues to completely dominate this emerging sector, cementing its position as the largest distributed tokenized commodity product in the world with $2.4 billion in total value. This steady momentum follows a massive first quarter where XAUt’s physical gold reserves skyrocketed by 36% to over 707,000 fine troy ounces. Looking ahead, the token is positioned for even more adoption after officially receiving Shariah certification from Amanah Advisors in July. This regulatory milestone paves the way for Islamic financial institutions to confidently integrate XAUt, potentially driving a new massive wave of global demand.
