The intersection of cryptocurrency and traditional finance just hit a major milestone. Tether’s gold-backed token, XAUt, has officially received Shariah certification from Amanah Advisors. This isn’t just a regulatory badge; it’s a vital step that unlocks access to digital gold for Islamic financial institutions and investors who need their portfolios to align with their religious beliefs. By bridging the gap between blockchain technology and ethical finance, Tether is positioning itself to tap into a massive, underserved market.

What Shariah Certification Means for Tether’s XAUt

For a financial product to be Shariah-compliant, it must follow a strict set of ethical rules. This means absolutely no interest, no excessive risk or speculation, and no hidden leverage. Amanah Advisors thoroughly reviewed XAUt and confirmed that its structure checks all these boxes, primarily because it is fully backed by a tangible, real-world asset. Tether ensures that every single XAUt token represents exactly one troy ounce of physical gold, safely locked away in highly secure Swiss vaults.

With this certification in hand, Tether now has a clear and culturally respectful pathway to market its gold token to a broader demographic. The company is specifically setting its sights on regions where Islamic finance is a staple, such as the Gulf Cooperation Council, South Asia, and parts of Africa. The token is already a heavyweight in the crypto space, and this news will likely fuel further growth. Recent reports show XAUt is backed by over 707,000 troy ounces of gold, valued at more than $3.3 billion. Furthermore, data from RWA.xyz highlights an impressive leap, with the asset’s on-chain value jumping from about $700 million in July 2025 to a staggering $2.5 billion today.

The Growing Demand for Islamic Crypto Finance

For years, cryptocurrencies have sparked intense debate among Islamic scholars. The core issue usually boils down to the highly volatile nature of digital assets and whether they violate fundamental rules against gambling and excessive uncertainty. However, as the blockchain space matures, financial companies are making a conscious effort to build digital assets that respect these religious boundaries and cater to the $3 trillion Islamic finance market.

This push for compliance is already yielding real-world results across the industry. Back in 2025, Bahrain’s AlAbraaj Restaurants Group made waves by adopting a Bitcoin treasury strategy, explicitly aiming to build Shariah-compliant financial tools to bring Bitcoin to the Islamic world. Fast forward to April of this year, and Palm Azgar Finance expanded its Shariah-compliant PUSD stablecoin to the ADI Chain. This move gave institutions the power to settle trades using dollar- or dirham-linked tokens on the exact same network, providing much-needed flexibility.

At the center of all this innovation is Dubai. The city has firmly established itself as the leading crypto hub in the Middle East by embracing forward-thinking regulations. Recently, Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) handed out its 50th crypto license, officially overtaking major global players like Singapore and Hong Kong. As regulatory clarity improves and compliant products like Tether’s XAUt enter the market, the bridge between traditional Islamic finance and the digital economy is becoming stronger than ever.
