The Ethereum Foundation is officially changing its approach to future-proofing the blockchain against emerging technological threats. According to Ethereum researcher Justin Drake, the foundation is actively moving away from the Poseidon hash function in its upcoming post-quantum architecture. Instead, developers are shifting their focus toward well-established, battle-tested alternatives like SHA and BLAKE. This strategic pivot marks a significant update in how the network plans to handle large-scale data verification securely and efficiently in a post-quantum world.

Why Ethereum is Leaving the Poseidon Hash Function Behind

A hash function serves as a foundational mathematical tool that converts data into a fixed digital fingerprint, allowing computers to quickly verify that information remains untampered. Originally, the Poseidon hash function was a top contender for Ethereum’s future post-quantum systems, specifically for the planned leanVM. This upcoming virtual machine is being designed to help the network efficiently process and verify massive volumes of blockchain activity. However, recent cryptographic breakthroughs have completely changed the playing field.

Drake explained that rapid advancements in SNARKs—compact cryptographic proofs that confirm complex computations without needing to repeat the underlying work—have essentially erased the performance benefits Poseidon once offered. Because these modern proofs have become so highly optimized, conventional hash functions can now run just as efficiently. This technological leap makes the switch to more established, traditional options a logical and secure step for the foundation’s long-term roadmap.

The Timeline for Ethereum’s Post-Quantum Security Upgrades

While these advanced post-quantum systems have not yet been deployed on the Ethereum mainnet, the foundation has outlined a preliminary timeline for the massive network upgrade. A production-ready version of leanVM is currently targeted for release in 2027. Following that major milestone, developers plan to systematically integrate these post-quantum deployments across Ethereum’s consensus, data, and execution layers by the year 2028.

Industry experts are already backing the strategic shift toward older cryptography. Sreeram Kannan, the founder and CEO of Eigen Labs, noted that relying on established hash-based systems is fundamentally safer for the network. Because legacy options have endured years of rigorous public scrutiny, they present far fewer known avenues of attack than newer post-quantum approaches. Furthermore, joint development efforts between the Ethereum Foundation, Eigen Labs, and the zero-knowledge proof company Succinct have already resulted in proving speeds increasing by two and a half times. This ongoing collaboration ensures that Ethereum can deploy robust, future-proof security measures much faster and safer than previously anticipated.
