Quantum computers are advancing rapidly, bringing a massive looming threat to the cryptocurrency world. A recent Bloomberg analysis estimated that a staggering $470 billion in Bitcoin could eventually be vulnerable to hacks by sufficiently powerful quantum machines. To combat this, blockchain security firm AmericanFortress has unveiled a groundbreaking proposal. They have introduced a new cryptographic scheme designed to protect existing crypto wallets from future quantum threats, all without forcing users to go through the headache of moving their funds, rotating keys, or changing their wallet addresses.
Upgrading Security Without Changing Your Wallet Address
Traditionally, upgrading to post-quantum security has meant abandoning old wallet addresses and transferring digital assets to completely new ones. AmericanFortress wants to eliminate that friction. According to their recently published technical paper on the Cryptography ePrint Archive, their proposed scheme allows existing wallet addresses to stay exactly as they are while adding a powerful layer of post-quantum armor. This method is highly versatile, designed to be fully compatible with the standard seed-based hierarchical deterministic wallets already used across major networks like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.
Instead of completely ripping out and replacing the traditional elliptic curve cryptography that current wallets rely on, the AmericanFortress solution cleverly uses zero-knowledge proofs derived directly from a user’s original seed phrase. While users continue to sign their daily transactions using their familiar keys, participating blockchain nodes work in the background to verify these zero-knowledge proofs. Although the company’s technical paper is currently awaiting formal peer review, it represents a highly user-friendly approach to future-proofing digital assets.
The Race for Post-Quantum Blockchain Security
AmericanFortress is far from the only organization preparing for the quantum computing era, as the broader industry pursues several different paths to lock down digital assets. On the hardware side, a company called Freedom Factory recently launched PQ1, a post-quantum hardware wallet built specifically for Ethereum and other EVM-compatible networks. Unlike the software-based approach proposed by AmericanFortress, PQ1 relies on dedicated physical hardware to generate post-quantum cryptographic signatures, utilizing SPHINCS+C10 technology and ERC-4337 smart accounts to keep transactions safe from next-generation hacks.
The entire blockchain ecosystem is feeling the urgency to act before quantum computing fully matures and breaks current encryption standards. Developers across the globe are heavily focused on researching and deploying migration strategies. In just the last few months, a major consortium pledged $15 million to fund Bitcoin quantum security research, while the Ethereum Foundation published its own official proposal for migrating accounts to quantum-resistant cryptography. Meanwhile, Algorand has formally outlined its plans to introduce fully quantum-resistant accounts by the year 2027, proving that the race to secure the future of cryptocurrency is already in full swing.
