Real-world asset tokenization platform Ondo Finance is making a major strategic shift. Moving away from its original plans for an institution-focused layer-1 blockchain announced in 2025, the company has officially launched the Ondo Network. This new offchain execution network marks a significant departure in how the platform plans to handle digital asset trading and institutional settlements. The system is already live and actively powering trades for Ondo Perps, the platform’s perpetual futures ecosystem.

How the Ondo Network Uses Trusted Execution Environments

Traditional blockchains typically rely on a vast, distributed network of computers to validate transactions and maintain a shared global state. Ondo’s new approach streamlines this process by taking the core trading activity off public ledgers. Instead, the Ondo Network runs its trading software inside a highly protected, isolated computing space known as an “enclave.” In the broader cryptocurrency space, this sophisticated privacy technology is commonly referred to as a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE).

To ensure system integrity without traditional blockchain consensus, a designated group of operators is tasked with verifying that the core software remains completely unaltered. Security is maintained through a split-key mechanism, meaning each operator holds only a fraction of the digital key required to authorize asset transfers. While the heavy lifting of trading execution happens offchain within these enclaves, Ondo confirms that all final transfers are ultimately recorded and settled on public blockchains. The company has not yet disclosed the exact number of operators or their identities.

From the 2025 Ondo Chain to Future Offchain Innovations

Ondo describes this new offchain system as a natural evolution of the Ondo Chain, which was first introduced in February 2025 as a dedicated blockchain for bringing traditional financial assets onchain. That original layer-1 concept showed early promise when it reached the testnet phase in 2025. It even successfully executed its first major transaction—a tokenized US Treasury settlement carried out in collaboration with JPMorgan’s Kinexys and Chainlink.

Despite those early milestones, Ondo’s leadership has embraced a more pragmatic technical direction for immediate deployment. Addressing the structural shift, the company plainly stated that the current network is not a blockchain today because it simply does not need to be one. Looking ahead, Ondo Finance has left the door open for further decentralization. While no strict timeline was provided, future updates may include onboarding additional enclave operators, recording a broader scope of network activity on public blockchains, and introducing a staking system that requires network participants to lock up tokens for added security.
